My M-audio BX5a monitors finally died this month and I was forced to make a decision on which monitors to move to next. I rented a pair of Yorkville YSM6 monitors to test out in my studio. They were good - I found they had a really well defined sound stage - but were lacking a little in the bass department, and the high end was too harsh for me (my ears were getting fatigued after short sessions). The Mackies were on sale, so I decided to take a chance on a pair of MR824s and so far am really impressed. They deliver right out of the box - and have adjustment options that make a subtle, but meaningful difference in the space. I can't believe how QUIET these monitors are when audio isn't coming through. With both with my old BX5as and the YSM6s, I could tell when they were on because a little hiss would bleed through. But with the Mackies, if the light wasn't on at the front, I wouldn't know they were on at all! (actually, now I can hear the hum of my computer fan more than anything else!) It's also great that the 8" Mackies are almost exactly the same size as the 6" in Yorkville monitors - so they aren't completely overwhelming on the mixing desk. The only issue I have now is that I can really tell where my old mixes need work - which is what you want from studio monitors. Still - can't believe how much more accurate these speakers are then what I was using before. I highly recommend you consider these speakers.
