1959HW

Online

To the minds and ears of many, the all-valve 100 Watt Super Lead heads of the mid to late 1960s (67-69) with the famed Plexiglas front panel, have been the holy grail of great rock tone. Now, the Handwired 1959HW is a line right back to that celebrated era.

An accurate reissue, the 1959HW has 'Plexi' DNA running right through it. It has the classic tonal notes of those early Plexi which, being non-master-volume, when cranked overdrive the power valves, produces those sweet, highly responsive, harmonically rich tones, with chest-punching projection. And to make the 1959HW as authentic as possible, its design incorporates original thickness, original pitch matrix, and point-to-point tag boards.

With the transformers being an integral part of the 'Plexi' sound, Marshall has also worked closely with Dagnall to duplicate the later era Plexi power transformer. The result is that the 1959HW is the best of both worlds because it takes the best features from early Plexi and later Plexi to produce a truly awesome re-issue. "The original 'Plexi' sound that launched rock guitar is better than ever and even louder than we remember." Guitarist Magazine

I bought my 1959 HW when it first came out as a re issue, most reading this will know about Marshall tone and I’ve owned 2204, 800, 900, but there’s something about this original that is different than the rest, it gives you PUNCH and articulate tone the others don’t, it’s the limitless headroom, and it’s clean tone rivals a Fender Twin - takes pedals like hand in glove. No reverb but does have effects loop - with an EMX holy grail reverb pedal its perfect ! You have to jump the channels and that’s where the real magic lives. Not a forgiving amp for mistakes. It makes you work to play well, and I love that fact. It’s loud as the day is long- so make sure you’ve got an attenuation( I still use my Tom Sholz power soak I bought in 84) or a forgiving wife/ girlfriend. But onstage it cannot be defeated and cuts through the mix really well. changed the 4-EL34 power and 3-12AX7’s to Mullards for even lush tight tone and in my opinion they are the best tubes to use in this head bar none. Played through a 1960 4-12 Marshall cab will instantly remind you of every great band and record you hold dear.. it’s a lot of dough initially but the best quality stuff usually is and you won’t regret this purchase .. hold onto for life and it will serve you well. It’s not a metal amp but it could be I guess. I use a very beat up Boss OD- 1 from 79, boss CE-2 chorus, boss DD-2 delay and Hendrix cry baby moded Wah pedal. it loves Old analogue pedals, or a emulator, you can’t loose in the long run.

Ordered this amp from L&M and it took a long time to come in, as they are hand built, but it was well worth the wait. Great tones, crazy power, paired up with a Les Paul Standard and vintage cab it can’t be beat!
