I'm starting gather a small collection of guitars at our household, and now my son (age 12) is now starting lessons. His teacher lent him a small body/folk sized acoustic guitar which fit him perfectly. While I mostly play and love my dreadnought acoustic (which is too big for my son), I found the borrowed guitar (laminate top) to sound a bit hollow and flat. I asked our piano teacher (who also works at a music/guitar shop) which beginner small body guitar is good, and she suggested the Yamaha FS800 (smaller body) or FG800 (FG = dreadnought sized). After reading/watching many online reviews, I asked our teacher to bring home for us the FS800 to try. Comparing it directly with the borrowed guitar (laminate top) vs the FS800 (solid wood top) playing in a quiet room in my home, I noticed an immediate difference in sound, with the FS800 sounding much more robust and lively. While I do love the extra low end/booming sounds of my dreadnought, I find the smaller FS800 to be more comfortable to play for long periods of time, especially under my right arm and chest area where the body of the guitar is a bit smaller. Our piano teacher says all of the guitar teachers she knows will have their thousand dollar guitars at home, but bring along a FS800 for their students to learn. I've also changed over the strings to silk n steel ones, which make it much easier for my son to learn with.
