This is the high gain version of their combo amps. I don't need to be up in the metal zone but I do play hard edged blues and keeping the gain down a bit and using the 'low gain' input keeps it at a 'reasonable' amount of gain. But the real star of this amp, at least to me, is the clean channel which I find gorgeous in tone and takes pedals really well.
There is some confusion by people who first sit down with a Rivera amp because Channel 1 is actually the high gain side, pull the volume knob on channel 1 to get to channel 2.
Dialing in the tone you want is a bit of work on this amp as it has so much going on.
The other thing is it is - for this kind of amp - really really loud. I tried the high gain side, but stay with the low gain for my needs.
The "value" rated lowest because the resale on these is really low compared to other amps in this price range. The fact is it's a PCB board based amp rather than using hand wired or point-to-point, which lowers the value for people who think those are the only amps worth owning.
But this thing is a workhorse with boutique amp sound.
