I wanted a controller to use with Steinberg's Cubase 10 Pro on a well equipped PC running Windows 10 64bit. The pads are excellent... great sensitivity - user adjustable... but only with 3 different settings. I was previously using Steinberg's CMC-PD controller (4 x 4 with great pads). After using the LaunchPad Components editor (online), I was able to assign everything I needed for my desired functions. After using an 8 x 8 grid (Launchpad X) as opposed to a 4 x 4 grid (CMC-PD, Korg padKontrol, Presonus ATOM, etc.), I found the the 8 x 8 grid structure is more conducive to a better workflow. I can immediately address instruments (drums) in any register without switching banks and searching for the instrument (drum) I want to trigger. This is a huge deal maker for me. Also, the fact that I can customize the pads via the software editor is a great asset. I can assign note numbers, CC instances, etc. via an intuitive software interface and save all settings easily. The ability to colour code any pad allows me to visually group any or all of my different instruments. To reiterate, the pads are very good... among the best I have ever used... (Steinbrg CMC-PD, Korg padKontrol and Presonus ATOM). As far as the downloadable software is concerned, it may be a nice bonus... certainly an introduction to a new software experience. I personally do not use Ableton Live. I'm old school linear software user (Cubase). I understand from other reviews that Launchpad functions very well with Ableton Live, for which it was primarily designed. Make no mistake... it works very well with Cubase and (I'm assuming), with all DAWs that receive midi info.
