BELLWETHER

Online

The Bellwether is a bucket brigade delay pedal with tap tempo. Offering analog circuity and up to 1000ms of lush delays, the Bellwether ushers in a rich soundscape of long and short trails. It can achieve the warm saturated sounds found in delays like the Maxon AD999 and the coveted Boss DM-2. Inversely, the repeats can also be brightened up with the tone control for more pronounced rhythmic delays. The Analog Chorus Engine allows you to manipulate the depth and rate of the chorus effect applied to your trails; creating a deep soundscape of ambient modulation. Set the time and repeat controls low to get that classic western slap back sound or drag them out to achieve shoegaze perfection. Take it all the way to 10 to achieve a self-oscillating delay.

Four tap division options are offered to control the rhythm of your repeats: quarter notes, eighth notes, dotted eighth notes, and triplets. Expression control options are offered to swing either the time or repeat controls back-and-forth. Manipulate the time control to get that Johnny Greenwood oscillation or use it on the fly to manipulate the repeat control; adding long tails to your diamonds.

I bought this at the Main and Terminal Vancouver L&M, traded it back for something “newer and better”, and miraculously got the same serial number model back when I realized the error of my ways. It does something tonally that is is very beautiful that my other delay rigs do not: adds a murky and dark choral like repeat that can run amok if the brightness is set too high but is otherwise sonic perfection. There is a tap selection dial on the left that when spun while playing flips your parts through pitch shifts that are eerie and somewhat unpredictable and yet very musical. Too many delays give you insane glissando shifts that are useless in the context of a composition but this gives the pedal a musical gear that I have never heard anywhere else in the same way. The developer confirmed my suspicion that the shifts break in thirds, fourths, and fifths. Fantastic on a tonic minor chord. When you figure out the magic formula, you can break a single chord into a single sustaining progression of related chords on the fly. Not for everyone, but if you are looking for something analog and quite dark, something sonically unique, then this beautifully designed box is an absolutely beautiful piece of gear to consider. I will never give it up again.

This is probably one of the best sounding delays as far as the effect goes. No complaints. But there is something wrong with the circuit in the one I purchased which caused loud popping when pressed and tons of background cycle noise. I actually couldn't believe the amount of noise for a delay pedal in this price range. Walrus Audio need to do something about the quality control of their pedals. Just awful. I had to return mine.
