Welcome to the world of Direct String Synthesis. The principal is simple: a focused feedback loop directed at a single string. This produces a powerful, infinite sustain, rich in harmonics for incredible guitar sounds. It's like amplifier feedback with greater control and predictability, at any volume, even through headphones. This hand-held synthesizer provides an amazing variety of textures and tonal slurs virtually an instrument in itself

I've been using my e-bow for a couple of months now for some Radiohead songs we've been playing around with. It does take a little bit of practice to get the position right but it comes with a manual that gives you suggestions on how to use it and how to get different sounds from it. I would suggest using a compressor or volume pedal to help control the volume. Sometimes, especially when new to it, the volume will jump or you'll get some squeaky sounds and a compressor or volume pedal with help control that. Overall I'm super happy with it and I have a lot of cool ideas how I can use this for future songs, you just have to use your imagination. :)

I am a master of the ebow! The guy who said you don't want it to hit the strings does not realize what the ebow can do. Hitting the strings with it produces the 'rich harmonics'. Or try wiggling it on the string, crazy! Tap the notes, throw in a string touch and wiggle here and there while following a rhythm and you sound like the Second Coming of Jimi, and all without any distortion effects! Anyway if you actually want it to sound like a violin you have to reverse the waveform; the ebow produces bowed sounds in reverse.

I have had the Ebow for years now but if I had the money, I'd install the Fernandes Sustainer in my guitar to free up my picking hand as it holds the Ebow when using it. The FS allows for more freedom. The neat thing with the Ebow is the second version has an octave setting as on option over the standard setting. In standard the thing vibrates the string without picking. It takes practice to control unwanted string noises, changing to adjacent strings and keeping the volume consistent as wound strings sound louder. You also have to avoid touching the string as it causes the note to fizzle out as it is in cobtact with the unit. Its meant to sound like a violin, well, sort of. The octave up setting creates the standard note plus another note an octave up. This is where the effect truly shines. The Edge of U2 used one in the song With Or Without You. I always wondered how those notes faded in and out without the sound if oicking the notes.

Versatile little device. Bit of a learning curve. Seems a little delicate, especially the switch. Can produce some amazing sounds. Great instruction manual.
