A Must-have Tool for Any Rig

Low-gain microphones typically come with high-impact problems that can frustrate engineers. Unfortunately, many low-output microphones, such as the Shure SM7b, the RE20, and ribbon microphones like the classic RCA 44A, which are among the best sounding mics out there. Luckily, theres the 2-channel Cloudlifter CL-2 Mic Activator by Cloud Microphones a perfect solution to any situation in which you need to cleanly boost a microphone signal before the preamp. Driven by the phantom power circuit on board your mixer, the Cloudlifter CL-2 adds up to +25dB of perfectly transparent gain to your signal, giving low-output mics a major boost which can make even budget microphones sound clean and professional.

The Cloudlifter CL-2 is also ideal for use with any ribbon mic, since it changes the phantom power that can hurt them into the extra gain they require. Install techs and live sound engineers love the CL-2, because it can provide long cable runs with enough energy to ward off noise. Its also excellent for acoustic guitars with XLR outputs, giving them an immediate dose of extra gain that prevents noise from infiltrating your sound. Whether you work in sound reinforcement or in a studio, youll find endless uses for this amazing device!

There are a lot of mixed reviews over the Cloud Microphone products paired with the Shure SM7B. I can only share my honest opinion with my current setup. My set up is for podcasting and I am using the Zoom H6 recorder, SM7B microphone and the cloudlifter. I find that when using the CL-2 inline I can decrease my gain on the H6 to approx. 4. When I am running the SM7B without the CL-2 My gain jumps to 7. There really isn't any line noise caused by the gain but what I can tell you is that any other sounds other than actual speaking is accentuated. My only gripe about the product is that it is expensive. If it were a little cheaper I would definitely give it a perfect score in value.

Picked up this item about a month ago and have been wowed by what it does when used in combination with my Shure SM7 (dynamic) microphone. It is very transparent (adds no color to the signal). I have depended on condenser mics for capturing vocal performances in my studio sessions for the longest time. But, adding a Cloudlifter (CL-2 Mic Activator) in the signal chain allows me to take advantage of the warm tone a dynamic microphone offers without having to resort to additive (and sometimes destructive) signal processing. I wish I had known about this product a long time ago. What a difference it makes. Money well spent. I don't think I'll go back to using dynamic mics without it.
