I was in the market for a new Maple snare and I knew it was going to be Ludwig since they’re my favourite drum company. I came across this Standard Maple snare, saw the price and instantly went to my local store and ordered one. It’s made in the USA so I knew it was top notch from the beginning, when it arrived I opened up the box and was completely blown away with the Ebony veneer, bearing edges, and overall craftsmanship. The sound is warm, bright, and has a solid knock if you tune the drum lower. Higher tuning has a solid pop with a nice piercing crack, the tuning range is wide and I’d say it’s a extremely versatile drum overall. Very sensitive snare I have to admit, the stock heads sound great as well. I’ll probably throw a Remo Black Dot on it once the stock head is worn out. Overall I highly recommend this snare if you need a wood drum for your arsenal! The Most Famous Name On Drums. Ludwig for life.

I've been play drums for over 30 years now (Yikes!) and have several high end snare drums, including two other Ludwigs. The wife bought me this little number for Christmas. Boy what a refreshing modern day snare this is! Bright, crisp, focused and a lovely warm tone all project from this snare. It's made with typical high quality Ludwig components and sounds better than some of my other snares that are twice as much! WOW! I couldn't recommend this enough for some one wanting a maple snare at reasonable cost - plus it's on sale right now!

Amazing value. This is a genuine Ludwig maple snare made in the USA and it sounds like it. They did cut a few corners to achieve that price point. Instead of a lacquer or wrap finish, the outer later of the shell is a nice looking satiny veneer. I'm fine with that, I'd buy the rest of the kit if they made it. The snare wires however are as cheap as they come, exact same thing you'll find for 15$ from Stagg or Cannon, attached with plastic straps. Throw this out right away. I put Puresound Super 30 on mine with the mounting wires that came with it. Still amazing value even after the extra 30-40$ for new wires. Also, while the throw off is the new improved Atlas, the butt plate is the old style that uses philips screws to hold the snares (does not work with a drum key like the throw off side does). Not really a big deal, just make sure to carry a screwdriver with you (my other snare is a 1968 Acrolite so I have to do this anyway) The heads appear to be proper US-made Remo (glued collar, not crimped). That said, with a fairly thin 6.5" deep maple shell and sharp 45 degrees bearing edges, this thing can ring a LOT, so I still replaced the top head with an Emperor Vintage. It's amazingly fat now, and still has a distinct Ludwig personality.
